How does course withdrawal (the W grade) work?
Written from the official source cited below. Where a rule changes each term, this answer describes the process and sends you to the source for the current dates.
After the add/drop period there is usually a separate withdrawal window during which you may drop a course with your advisor's approval; the course then shows as W on your record rather than a letter grade. There are normally limits on how many courses you may withdraw from during your studies and which courses are eligible. Because the periods and limits are set by regulation and change each term, confirm the current withdrawal rules and dates with the Registrar and the academic calendar.
