About this project
The METU Student Guide is an independent, student-built search tool for practical questions about studying and living at METU. It is not an official METU service and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the university.
The goal is simple: help students find a clear, current, source-backed answer quickly. Every answer shows where it comes from and when it was last checked. Official facts (from METU, Turkish government bodies, and local institutions such as EGO) are kept separate from student experience, and community tips are labelled as such so you always know what you are reading.
The guide never invents deadlines, fees, or policies. Where a precise figure matters, it points you to the official source instead of guessing. When it cannot answer something confidently, it says so and records the question anonymously so the gap can be filled.
Where the course data comes from
Course records are read from the official METU Academic Catalog and stored field by field: course code, title, department, faculty, METU credit, theoretical and laboratory hours, ECTS, language of instruction, level of study, the semesters it is offered, and the published course content.
Nothing is completed by hand. If the catalogue does not publish a field, the course page says not published in the catalogue rather than showing a plausible guess. Prerequisites, sections, timetables, quotas, and instructors change every term and are deliberately not reproduced here: the student system is the only correct place to check them.
How to read a source label
- Official METU
- Published by the university or one of its offices. Treat as policy.
- Turkish government
- Published by a state body, for example migration management or e-Devlet. Treat as law or official procedure.
- Local institutional
- Published by a local authority or service such as EGO for Ankara transport.
- Student community
- Reported by students, most often from public group chats, then checked and written up here. It describes what students experience. It is never presented as METU policy, and where student reports disagree the answer says so instead of picking one.
Privacy
Some questions in the guide are discovered from student community chats (Telegram and WhatsApp). These are used only to learn what students ask. Personal information (names, usernames, phone numbers, emails, ID numbers) is stripped before anything is analysed, and raw conversations are never published or made searchable. Sources are attributed as “student community,” never to an individual.
Search analytics are anonymous: the guide records the words of a query and coarse counts to find missing answers. It does not build profiles or store who searched for what.
